Apple's new operating system is out and as advertised earlier, it does include true 64-bit support which is being referred to as K64. As an end-user, one might not need to be worried about the bit-mode of his/her machine, whether 32-bit or 64-bit as Snow Leopard will be able to run applications in either mode.
However, being a kernel developer or a system-level developer, one might need to test something out against the 64-bit kernel in Snow Leopard which is disabled by default on non-server configurations. So here is nifty utility called K64 Enabler that lets you enable/disable the 64-bit kernel of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
Please note that to enable the 64-bit Kernel a K64 capable machine is required. Once enabled, this will also boost the performance of the machine. Simply download and use the utility, and use the activity monitor or the uname command in terminal to check if the 64-bit kernel mode has been enabled.
This works only on machines with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Download K64 Enabler from MacUpdate.
